Reading Lists: Instructor Guide

Gather readings with the Bookmarking extension

  1. Navigate to the webpage, article, video, or library catalogue record you want to add to your reading list.
  2. Click the Bookmarking extension (shown below in Google Chrome). It will open the bookmarking window. 


     
  3. Add additional details about the reading to supplement the information automatically pulled from the page (optional). See the box below for instructions. 
  4. Click Create or Create & add to list. 
    • Select Create to add the reading to your Bookmarks for later use.
    • Select Create & add to list to add the reading directly to a list. Follow the prompts to annotate the reading for your students, set importance (i.e. required or suggested reading), or add a note for Langara Library (optional). 

 

Notes: 

  • You can also manually add readings. Only use this option if you cannot find a reading on the web. To manually add a reading, click the My Bookmarks tab and Add -> Add manually
  • To attach a file to a reading (e.g. a scanned book chapter), follow the instructions for Requesting a Digitization

Add additional details about your reading

To add additional information (e.g. publication date, edition) to the bookmark for a reading: 

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 in the section above to initiate a bookmark for the reading.
  2. Scroll down to Add field: and select the detail you would like to add from the drop-down menu:

  3. Click the Add button. This will add a new field (box) to the bookmarking form.
  4. Enter the necessary information and click Create or Create & Add to List.

Bookmark a book chapter

The process for bookmarking a book chapter in Reading Lists is not intuitive! To bookmark a book chapter:

  1. Follow steps 1 and 2 in the section above to initiate a bookmark for the book in which the chapter appears.
  2. Scroll down to Add field: and select Has part (chapter, article, etc.)... from the drop-down menu.

  3. Click the Add button. This will load a new tab in the bookmarking form.
  4. Select Chapter under Resource Type *.  The tab you created will now be labelled Chapter. Enter the title of the chapter.
  5. Scroll down to Add field: and select Pages from the drop-down menu. Click Add and enter the page range for the chapter (optional).
  6. Click Create or Create & Add to List.

Build a reading list from your Bookmarks

Once you have bookmarked your readings, you can build lists with the click of a button. Think of your Bookmarks as your personal library. To build a reading list:

  1. Click on My Lists in Reading Lists. Create a reading list or select an existing reading list. 
  2. Select Add Resource.

    • Note: If your reading list is empty, this appears as a button on the right side of the screen. If you already have items in your reading list, Add resource appears when you hover with your mouse below a reading, as shown below.
  3. Use the search box to search for a reading. Click on the title of a reading to add it to your list.
