Reading Lists: Instructor Guide

Create a Reading List

To create a reading list:

  1. Click the My Lists tab in Reading Lists.
  2. Click Create new list on the right side of the screen.

reading list option under my lists

  3. Name your list. We recommend this format: Course Code + Course Number + Title of Course + (Instructor Surname)
    • Example: ENGL 1123 Introduction to Academic Writing (Smith)
    • Note: We do not recommend including the course section in the list name, since a reading list can be attached to multiple sections of a course (e.g. ENGL 1123 001 and ENGL 1123 M02). Omitting the course section from the reading list name makes it easier to 'reuse' a list (that is, you won't have to rename the list if you teach the same course, but with a different section number, in future).
  4. Provide a short description for students (optional).
  5. Click Select Hierarchy and search by course code/number/section (e.g. CMNS-1114-001). Select your course from the predictive text.
    • If you do not see your course in the predictive text, leave Hierarchy blank. You can attach your list to the Hierarchy at a later date.
  6. Select the Term in which the reading list will be used.

Some notes on Hierarchy:

  • When you create a reading list, you must select a node in Langara's Hierarchy. Nodes link reading lists to the institution, a subject, or a course. This facilitates searching and carrying over reading lists from semester to semester.
  • Course-level hierarchy is usually available a few weeks before the start of a new semester.
  • You can link a reading list to more than one node. This is handy if you are teaching multiple sections of a course.

Or, let us do it for you!

Don't have the time or energy to learn a new tool? No problem! Langara Library offers a "full service" reading list option.

Submit your syllabus, course outline, or bibliography to readinglists@langara.ca and Langara Library will create a reading list for you. Thereafter, you are free to addedit, delete or rearrange items from your reading list at any time.

A note on reading list privacy settings

The default privacy setting in Reading Lists is Public. Anyone with a link to Langara's instance of reading lists can browse Langara lists.

Instructors can set their reading lists to Private ("Only logged in users"). Only Langara users with authenticated access can see Private lists.

To change the privacy setting for your reading list:

  1. Click on the My Lists tab and navigate to the reading list for which you wish to change the privacy setting.
  2. Click Edit and select Edit list details.

  3. Select one of the options from the Who can view drop-down menu:
    • Institutional default (Public)
    • Everyone (Public)
    • Only logged in users (Private)
  4. Click Save.
