mystery of the Pacific Northwest
Ancient sea gardens discusses the likelihood of prehistoric mariculture on the Northwest Coast. It describes the consequences when a 1995 coastal habitat survey in the Broughton Archipelago in Queen Charlotte Strait identified unusual intertidal features: shore-parallel boulder ridges at the low-water line with sandflats landward of the ridges on an otherwise rocky shoreline. Hundreds of such features (353) were mapped on 689 km of surveyed coast in the Broughton Archipelago. In 2002, Adam Dick, a Kwakwaka'wakw hereditary clan chief and tradition-bearer identified the features as lu'xwxiwey, which resulted from Indigenous peoples' tilling of clam gardens. Their identification by a Kwakwaka'wakw elder confirms that they are archaeological features, although there have been no previous reports of such features. However, the process of clam gardening has been recorded ethnographically.
