Digital collections remain a priority for the library, especially with the move to online learning initiated by the pandemic. The majority of our purchasing power is heavily invested in electronic collections.
This year, we saw a major uptick in the number of digital items in our collection due in part to the Library subscription to the EBSCO eBook Comprehensive Academic Collection.
The Library’s collection is developed in consultation with the Langara community, with liaison librarians assigned to each of the college’s departments. Collections staff employ an evidence based approach to determine the needs of specific divisions, departments and courses, seeking to support Langara’s curriculum.
Usage of the Library's collection remains stable with an increase of 7% from last year. While each format saw an increase in usage, the largest increase was in the e-book format, which were used 30% more compared to last year.
Langara College takes great pride in being one of the leading advocates of open textbooks among post-secondary institutions in British Columbia. This year, Open Langara reached significant milestones that demonstrate the College’s commitment to open education. Since the commencement of data collection on open textbook adoption, Langara has incorporated open textbooks into more than 1,000 class sections, resulting in cost savings of over $3,000,000 for Langara students.
Langara College Library builds and manages a collection to support teaching, learning, research, innovation and academic success at the College.
