Copyright scenarios activity: Overview

This activity asks you to apply the concepts we discussed in the presentation portion of this class to real-world situations. These scenarios are based on questions we have received in Langara's Copyright Office. 

Form a group of 2-3 people and discuss the facts of each case. You may need to do a bit of reading. Select one person to summarize your discussion when we return to the large group. [Time allotted: 7-10 minutes].

Copyright scenario #1

An instructor wants to scan the library's copy of Ernest Hemingway's book A Farewell to Arms in its entirety to take to England on a research trip. Is this permitted?

Another college library has requested a copy of a section from an e-book in Langara's Safari Books Online collection through interlibrary loan. Is this permitted?

Copyright scenario #3

An instructor is teaching online and asks Langara Library staff to scan three chapters from its print copy of How to Be An Antiracist on their behalf. Is this permitted?

Hint: 'Amount' is one of the fair dealing factors outlined by the Supreme Court of Canada. Review Langara's fair dealing guidelines for examples of short excerpts.

An instructor wants to copy the open textbook Human Nutrition (University of Hawai'i) and incorporate information from Canada's Food Guide. Is this permitted?

The College's Communications and Marketing Department wants to add an online image from the site Pixabay to a recruitment pamphlet. Is this permitted?

An instructor wants to include an article from the journal BC Studies in a print course pack for her Canadian History course. She found it through the database Academic Search Complete. Is this permitted?

Copyright scenario #7

An instructor wants to copy a page from the Mayo Clinic website to share with their Nursing students in Brightspace. Is this permitted?

Hint: The Copyright Act includes a set of special exceptions for Education. Visit the Educational Exceptions section of the College's copyright website to see if this use is covered. 

Copyright scenario #8

A team based in Continuing Studies is conducting research to see if a Medical Laboratory Assistant program would be a good fit for the College. A member of the team wants to share an article they photocopied with their colleagues. Continuing Studies is a revenue-generating branch of the College. Is this permitted?
