Fine Arts 1143: Foundation Media Studio (Webster) Fall 2023

Choosing Your Topic

When considering an artist and their work, think about what your first response is and why. Choose something you're interested in! Research is easiest and you will naturally think of ideas when you're interested in your topic. Some research prompts to help you gather information and get started:

  • Process (what methods are used to create their work)
  • Materials (what props, object, or materials are used, if any)
  • Concepts (what themes, ideas, or areas of investigation are explored)
  • Relationship to audience (how does your artist address the viewer?)
  • Use of duration (how does your artist play with time?)
  • Site (how does location factor into your artist's work? Gallery or site-specific work?)
  • Identity, Subjectivity, the Body (how is your artist's work particular to their identity, how will you negotiate your own identity in relation to their work?)
  • What methods of display or documentation are used in their work?

Thinking about these aspects of an artist's work before you even begin your research will help you come up with keywords.
