Attachment in practice

The quality of early attachment relationships is of central importance to children's social and emotional development. It is vital to their all round development. Shot over the first three years of an infant's life, the film shows the development of attachment behaviour. By observing the interactions between infants and their carers we see the attachment stages unfolding, giving a real understanding of how it works in practice. While the film focuses on secure attachment references are also made to insecure attachments. The key aspects of secure base behaviour and the link between social and emotional development are shown clearly. Explanations of why things are happening at various stages are based on the now most generally accepted research and theory.

Berg demonstrates her approach in two therapy sessions with a family. Pather panchali

With the release in 1955 of Satyajit Ray's debut, Pather panchali, an eloquent and important new cinematic voice made itself heard all over the world. A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism, this naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years in the life of a family introduces us to both little Apu and, just as essentially, the women who will help shape him: his independent older sister, Durga; his harried mother, Sarbajaya, who, with her husband away, must hold the family together; and his kindly and mischievous "auntie" Indir--vivid, multifaceted characters all. With resplendent photography informed by its young protagonist's perpetual sense of discovery, Pather panchali, which won an award for Best Human Document at Cannes, is an immersive cinematic experience and a film of elemental power.

A dangerous son

One in 10 American children suffers from a serious emotional disturbance and over 17 million have experienced a psychiatric disorder. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Liz Garbus, A dangerous son focuses primarily on three families in crisis, each struggling with a child's severe mental illness and desperately seeking treatment in the face of limited resources and support. The film highlights the cycle of counselor visits, medications, hospitalizations, and encounters with law enforcement. The guilt and isolation parents feel can be overwhelming, as is the constant worry that their child may harm themselves or others. And while treatment can greatly improve outcomes, appropriate care is a luxury only for those who can afford it, or who happen to live in states with free or affordable treatment.

The three worlds of Bali

On the Indonesian island of Bali, the arts permeate almost every aspect of daily life. Gamelan music, wayang (shadow puppet) theater, dance, and elaborately constructed offerings of foods and flowers all represent attempts to please the gods and placate demons. In Balinese cosmology, demons are thought to dwell in the watery underworld, gods in the upper world, and human beings in the middle realm between the two. Much of human effort is directed toward maintaining the proper balance between these worlds, and between the forces of growth and decay. The pinnacle of such efforts is the ritual Eka Dasa Rudra, held once every hundred years. The entire population of the island is mobilized for this event, preparing offerings and streaming from thousands of village temples in processions to the sea. Eleven demons, of which Rudra is the most powerful, must be transformed into beneficent spirits. No one who participated in the ritual filmed in 1979 had ever witnessed its performance, which last occurred a century ago, and so the ritual was based on writings in ancient lontar-palm manuscripts.

Working without a script : good communication with Keegan-Michael Key

"Yes, and" means embracing and building upon new ideas. It fosters open mindedness and empowers people to think on their feet and take risks. Key concepts: actively listen; understand what is really being said; affirm each other's ideas; even if you disagree, build on the idea; help it grow. Working without a script asks viewers to break their current "no, but" pattern and commit to the "yes, and" philosophy--the same philosophy that allows professional improvisational actors to create effectively on stage.

The man card : white male identity politics from Nixon to Trump

Ranging from Richard Nixon's tough-talking, law-and-order campaign in 1968 to Donald Trump's hyper-macho revival of the same fear-based appeals in 2020, The man card shows how conservatives have lured white working-class men away from the Democratic Party by branding the Republican Party as the party of real men, attacking Democratic leaders as soft, and promising to restore declining white male power and authority in the face of demographic changes and ongoing struggles for racial, gender, and sexual equality. The man card pays special attention to how right-wing politicians, political operatives, and media commentators have used white-male identity politics to channel the legitimate, class-based grievances of tens of millions of white men into unbridled resentment of women, people of color, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, and so-called "liberal elites." It also explores how these deeply gendered dynamics have undercut the presidential prospects of women and undermined the nation's ability to adapt to a changing world.
