The general rule is to spell out one through nine and to use numerals for all other numbers.
Example: For the past eight months, our firm has employed 35 part-time workers.
A few exceptions to the general rule:
- If the number appears at the beginning of the sentence, it must be spelled out. Five hundred and twenty-five jobs have disappeared under the new management.
But: Under the new management, 525 jobs have disappeared.
- If the number is rounded up or is an estimate, it must be spelled out. That site is visited by thousands every day.
But: Yesterday there were only 1,035 visitors.
