Presenting Numbers

General Rule

The general rule is to spell out one through nine and to use numerals for all other numbers.

Example: For the past eight months, our firm has employed 35 part-time workers.

A few exceptions to the general rule:

  1. If the number appears at the beginning of the sentence, it must be spelled out. Five hundred and twenty-five jobs have disappeared under the new management.
But: Under the new management, 525 jobs have disappeared.

  2. If the number is rounded up or is an estimate, it must be spelled out. That site is visited by thousands every day.
But: Yesterday there were only 1,035 visitors.
