For this class, you will participate in a long-term group project that examines sustainability in theory and practice through the case of Langara College, framed within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students will investigate the College’s climate action commitments, sustainability framework, and annual reports, connecting them to broader environmental studies concepts and global sustainability targets.
Langara itself serves as a living laboratory for how post-secondary institutions can reduce ecological footprints (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production), promote social sustainability and equity (SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities), and foster resilience in the face of climate change (SDG 13: Climate Action).
By engaging with both institutional practices and the SDG framework, students will critically assess how local actions contribute to global sustainability outcomes.
Potential Group Topics: Ecological restoration/education, water basin; active transportation with a focus on biking; waste management, recycling, facilities.
This guide will suggest resources that will help you through several phases of this project. It will be particularly useful when you conduct your literature review that you must include with your project plan. If you are having trouble with the research elements of this project, please don't hesitate to Ask A Librarian.
