Learning Outcomes

By the end of this tutorial, you should be able to:

  • Identify the various research and writing supports available to you at the Library and Learning Commons
  • Navigate to the education section of the Library website
  • Differentiate between peer reviewed articles and popular articles
  • Develop appropriate keywords for database searching using the database operators AND and OR

Part 1: Introduction to the Langara Library and Learning Commons

This section of the tutorial will introduce supports available at the Langara Library & Learning Commons, specifically:

  • Research supports such as online chat and one-on-one virtual meetings with librarians
  • Writing supports, including online chat with writing tutors and the WriteAway service
  • Citation supports

Part 2: Library Resources

This section of the tutorial will:

  • Highlight the various types of resources you can find using the Quick Topic Search
  • Define "peer review" and explain the peer review process
  • Explain the differences between searching library databases and search engines like Google
  • Provide a strategy to improve your keyword searching in library databases

In this section of the tutorial, I will demonstrate how to:

  • Search for library resources using the Quick Topic Search found on the Library homepage

  • Filter your results to find peer reviewed articles, e-books, and streaming video.

  • Save, share, and cite your articles
