OpenAthens Transition

Personalization

Some of the library's online resources allow users to personalize their experience once authenticated through OpenAthens. These personalization features vary, but when available they often include:

  • Saving search results
  • Saving searches
  • Annotating sources
  • Recommended resources

While personalization features can be very useful, they also require users to allow for their browsing history to be saved. For more information about privacy and OpenAthens, check out OpenAthens - Data Security and User Privacy FAQs.

ProQuest Ebook Central

Ebook Central has always had personalization options, including the ability to add items to a personal bookshelf. Unfortunately, the change in our authentication methods meant that your previously-saved items no longer appear on your bookshelf. With single sign-on authentication, you are signing in to your bookshelf when you log in to your library's system for access to the site. Because of the switch in authentication, a new account will be created and you will have a new bookshelf.

To retrieve items on your old bookshelf, you need to merge your new and old accounts. A librarian can do this on your behalf. Please contact Emma Lawson with the following information if you wish to have your bookshelves merged:

  • Your previous Ebook Central username (in most cases this will be your email address, if your library previously used the Ebook Central Patron Login authentication method to create accounts directly on Ebook Central)
  • Your current Ebook Central username. The username seen by our system may differ from the username you use when signing in. To see what Ebook Central is using as your username, sign in to Ebook Central and go to Settings > Profile. Copy what you see under the "Email/Username" field

EBSCO

The first time you log into EBSCO through OpenAthens, a unique anonymous OpenAthens numeric identifier tied to your Langara login is passed to Ebsco. This is used to create a new My Ebscohost account linked to your login. My Ebscohost personal accounts allow you to save search results to folders, to save search strategies, and more.

You do not need to add any personal information to your My Ebscohost personal account; the unique OpenAthens identifier is sufficient. However, if you would like to add more personal information, here are the steps.

To update your account with personal information

This is optional. After connecting through OpenAthens, click the Signin or Update My Account link in the upper right corner any EBSCO database to add your name and email address to your account.

To merge your old My Ebscohost account

If you already have a personal my Ebscohost account and you would like to move all saved items to your new account, you may merge accounts.Once your accounts are merged, the account that contained the data that was merged into the target account is removed and no longer exists.

To merge accounts:

Click Update My Account in the upper right corner of the screen and look for the option to Merge Accounts. Click the Get Started link.

Log in with the username and password for your previously-created account.

Follow the prompts to merge the older account into your new My Ebscohost account.
