Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT are a tool that can be helpful, including helping you with formatting citations. Tips on using generative AI:
- Don't enter in any personal information. We don't know how these tools store and use our information. Instead, ask questions.
- For example, paste in a job posting and ask "can you create a resume template for this job posting?" rather than pasting in your own resume with all of your personal information.
- Always check with your instructor before using generative AI for an assignment. Each instructor may have different preferences.
- For example, you may be allowed to use it to finesse your assignment as long as you write a note acknowledging that you have done so.
- Don't use it to create original content.
- For example, you cannot have it write any parts of your assignment for you.
- Always check everything over. Like any online tool, we need to use critical thinking when using it.
- For example, anytime we use a tool to help us format citations, we want to check it over since AI can make mistakes.
The MLA Style Center has the following page on how to cite content from generative AI.
