BIOL 2315 Biochemistry

Background Resources

It can be challenging to find and read scientific articles on a new topic when you're first learning about it. Doing some background reading on a topic can help you:

  • Better understand academic articles by introducing key concepts in an approachable way
  • Get ideas for important concepts or terms you could use to find academic articles
  • Learn different names for your protein before you start searching
  • Understand the breadth of well-established research on a topic

Reading these sources can make it easier for you to find peer-reviewed articles but you should not cite them in your assignment. Any information you find should be confirmed with academic articles - cite those!

Background resources to try

Protein Databases - to use or not to use!

There are online tools for protein information such as National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), UniProt, and Protein Data Bank (PDB). These are used by actual Biomedical and Bioinformatics researchers and contain a wealth of complex information on protein function, structure, and research.

You will get introduced to at least some of these tools during your labs like BLAST and your Structure lab.

You could use these sites to find some information on your protein, but you don't have to. For most proteins you will be able to use other background resources and journal databases to find sufficient information.

These sites have a LOT of information (much more than you need for this assignment). Email Jarvis for help navigating these sites!
