Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism: taking credit for academic or intellectual work that is not your own. Plagiarism is a very serious academic offense at Langara and at other post-secondary institutions.

If you have any doubts or questions about your written work and what constitutes plagiarism and what is acceptable, talk to your instructor and check the sources below.

In the Langara College Code of Academic Conduct, plagiarism is defined:

Plagiarism is the presentation of another person's or source's words and/or images and/or ideas as if they were one's own. It ranges from an entire assignment which is not the student's own work to specific passages within an assignment taken from a source without acknowledgement. For plagiarism to occur, intent is not necessary; plagiarism can be either intentional or unintentional. In either case, it is unacceptable.

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

  • directly quoting the words of others without using quotation marks or indented format to identify them
  • using sources of information (published or unpublished) without identifying them
  • paraphrasing materials or ideas of others without identifying the sources
