This guide describes the online tutorials offered through Brightspace by D2L, how to access them, and FAQs for students and faculty.

Introduction to Research Content & Learning Outcomes

The Introduction to Research tutorial provides students a basic orientation to concepts and practices that will help them complete the research component of an assignment. This tutorial is designed to take roughly 90 minutes to complete. It consists of a combination of text-based, video-based, and activity-based elements.

By the end of the Introduction to Research tutorial, students should be able to:

  • define research as a scholarly activity
  • prepare a research topic that is flexible and researchable
  • assess information needs and apply appropriate resources
  • use effective strategies to search library resources and
  • read and interpret a citation and search for a cited resource at Langara Library.

The tutorial includes six modules that guide students through a research process:

  1. What is research?
  2. What is my topic?
  3. What do I need?
  4. Where should I look?
  5. How do I find out more?
  6. What did I learn?

Students are assessed using three challenging quizzes with rotating question banks after modules 2, 4, and 6. These quizzes add up to a mark out of 10.
