LibGuides Basics Workshop

Introduction to the LibGuides system and content creator interface

Mistakes I've made so that you don't have to

  1. Making a copy of a guide, page, or box that contains assets will duplicate every asset - rich text boxes are OK though
    • The system tells me who made these things and I will notice, and then badger you about it

  2. Changing your template after you have created your guide will do two alarming things...
    • Put your profile box on EVERY page, in the centre column, which makes your face uncomfortably large
    • Any content already in the guide may get put into hidden columns, don't worry, it didn't disappear completely

  3. Cutting and pasting directly from Word or a webpage will bring it a whole lot of unnecessary HTML and in-line styling. Always use the plain text paste filter provided by the system, or better yet, run it through notepad.
    • This is often why things don't format as expected, and it can also increase load times for users
    • I will also badger you about this if I notice it

  4. Libguides has a tendency to introduce paragraph tags around non-breaking spaces in odd places if you flip back and forth between the WYSIWIG and the HTML edit screen in a rich text item. Not much you can do about this except try to stay on top of them if you notice things are getting too spaced out.
