HIST 1123 (Fulton)

Assignment Overview: Research Essay

You are asked to write a research essay on one of the following two topics:

  1. Looking at one aspect of life (e.g. the family, faith), branch of society (e.g. the military, clergy), or another broad category (e.g. social mobility, the economy), argue the impacts of the Black Death. This essay should not be about the disease itself but rather its consequences on the specific aspect of medieval life that you focus on.
  2. When considering the First Crusade, argue what factors contributed most to the crusade’s success.

There are two parts to this assignment:

  • A proposal (approximately 50-250 words in length). This should include:
    • Your thesis and three supporting arguments (in point form)
    • A Bibliography with a minimum of six sources (at least three primary sources and three secondary sources)
  • The essay itself (approximately 1,500 words (+/- 200) in length)

Although the topics are set, you have considerable freedom to approach your topic in a manner that most suits your interests and the findings of your research. Each essay should be argumentative and analytical, rather than descriptive – focus on ‘why’ rather than ‘what’.
