CNST 1130: Work in Canadian Society

Tips for Canadian Studies Research

The following techniques are useful when researching Canadian Studies topics:

  1. Brainstorm synonyms (words that are closely related or have the same meaning)

    • Example: Wage, income, pay

  2. Use quotation marks (" ") when words are commonly used together as a phrase

    • Example: "minimum wage"

  3. Use the asterisk (* symbol) for words with variable endings

    • Example: Canad* = Canadian and Canada

  4. Use Boolean operators to hone your search

    • AND connects concepts within your research topic. Example: Gender AND wage gap

    • OR indicates synonyms. Example: Work OR employment

    • NOT indicates words to exclude from your search. Note: NOT is very powerful. Use it carefully!

You can also use these techniques to improve your Google searches.
