Exploring Your Topic

Getting an overview of your topic is the first step in your research process. Encyclopedias and credible websites can give you some background information on your subject.

Remember to:

  • Make note of major concepts
  • Look for the language used to describe your topic - note any synonyms, and look up terms you don't understand
  • If there are references available, look through them to see if there are any that would be good for further reading.

Example notes from Wikipedia article (to be confirmed with trustworthy sources):

  • Latin name: Sepiola atlantica
    • Order: Cephalopoda
  • Found in shallow coastal waters: Pacific Ocean and parts of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans
  • Camouflage themselves using counter-illumination
    • do this via a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria in a light organ in the squid's mantle 
    • colonisation of the light organ in juveniles induce morphological changes that lead to maturity
